Sometimes a journey is more than miles traveled. Sometimes it is an act of remembrance, love, and hope.
In September 2025, Karen Donnellan, a board member of Maria Droste Counseling Services, undertook a remarkable pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, walking nearly 400 miles from Lisbon, Portugal to Santiago, Spain. Each step was taken in memory of her beloved brother, Robert, who died by suicide in 2023 at the age of 59.
Karen’s journey was deeply personal, but it was also a call to action.
Motivated by the loss of her brother and the reality that too many men suffer in silence, Karen used her walk to raise awareness about men’s mental health and the urgent need to break the stigma that prevents people from seeking help.
“The stigma surrounding mental illness silences far too many, and the consequences are devastating,” Karen has said.
Through her Camino pilgrimage, Karen raised funds to support expanded access to therapy for men and boys, increase mental health awareness, and help Maria Droste Counseling Services expand the number of clinicians available to meet growing demand.
Her journey reminds us that conversations about mental health matter — and that compassion, community, and care can change lives.
We are honored that Karen will share her story at Fashion for Compassion 2026, helping inspire others to continue walking the path toward greater understanding, openness, and support for mental health.
