OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

As a licensed mental health counselor, I aim to develop a clear and compassionate understanding of my clients. I believe that effective and lasting change in therapy is a collaborative, multidimensional process. To assist this process, I draw from clinical training in emotion-focused cognitive-behavioral therapies, mindfulness, meditation, and body-based therapies. While reduction of acute symptoms is an immediate goal, I strive to foster an open and supportive relationship that empowers people to better understand their emotions and connect to sources of wellness and well-being beyond the presenting problem. I work with people on a variety of issues including moving through and coping with grief, loss, trauma, transitions, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, sport and performance related issues, relationship difficulties, and enhancing wellness.

I received my master’s degree from Boston College and have been teaching and studying yoga as a system of wellness for over a decade. Alongside my clinical work, I teach meditation to high schoolers, and work in research to advance the understanding, prevention, and treatment of suicide and self-harm behaviors at Harvard University. I offer psychotherapy for individuals of all ages, couples, and families and people from a variety of backgrounds and I welcome the opportunity to connect!

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

I approach therapy from a strengths-based, solution focused stance with the belief that my clients know themselves better than I, or anyone, ever will. I believe there is healing in sharing our stories, our pain, and our triumphs.

My background in working with survivors of Traumatic Brain Injuries has allowed me to listen, understand, and trust in the therapeutic process, while utilizing a trauma informed lens and a holistic approach.

The work we will do together may not always be comfortable or easy, but I believe there is no change without discomfort, and I will be here to support you as you grow each step of the way.

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

People seek mental health counseling for a variety of reasons, such as for relief from anxiety, sadness, or loss. Others might feel disconnected or stuck in patterns of unsatisfying or difficult relationships. Wherever you are in life, I appreciate the courage it takes to work through challenges.

I am interested in empowering people to express themselves more openly, feel more connected, and enhance capacities for a more authentic life. In my work, I strive to co-create an environment of trust and respect through a collaborative and flexible approach. I believe that healing occurs when individuals can safely reflect on the ways they relate with others, the world, and with themselves.

Emotional pain can signal that one is called upon to make changes or understand things through a new perspective. Against the backdrop of that pain, therapy can be a deeply impactful, supportive and rewarding experience, and I would be honored to work with you."

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

As a LICSW, I have years of experience working in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team to provide quality integrated care to adult clients with complex medical and psychiatric needs. After my sabbatical year, renewed and refreshed I felt drawn to continue my clinical practice in the spirit of compassion embraced at Maria Droste Counseling Services.

I work in the spirit of Motivational Interviewing, where safety, partnership, acceptance, compassion and the belief that together we will find what you need to realize your desired change are guiding principles. Using a client centered approach, I utilize mixed modalities to address limiting beliefs to improve capacity to manage distressing symptoms and increase self-efficacy.

Rachel Sykes, M.Ed., MHC

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

I am a mental health counselor at Maria Droste Counseling on a part-time basis.  I graduated from Bridgewater State University with a M.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling. I entered the counseling field after over 25 years in the investment management industry, where I obtained my MBA from Suffolk University and earned the right to use the CFA designation. I am also a certified yoga instructor and reiki practitioner and have been teaching yoga since 2009.

I have experience working with individuals, both adults and children, couples, and families. I gain great satisfaction from seeing clients overcome anxiety, depression, and trauma and develop a strong sense of identity, autonomy, and confidence. When working with couples and families, I focus on building healthy communication skills which can then be used to address core issues, including trust, forgiveness, equity, and respect. I am honored to work with clients across all cultures and strive to offer unconditional acceptance and respect without judgment.

I consider myself an Adlerian (psychodynamic) psychotherapist, as I believe in the importance of early childhood and family experiences in forming one’s unique and private beliefs and style of life. I also draw upon a range of theoretical orientations including cognitive behavioral, person-centered, feminist, and family systems theory, as well as my study of mindfulness, in order to address the individual needs and concerns of each client.

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

I am a clinician with both a background in Public Health and Mental Health Counseling. I first got my Masters in Public Health from Boston University, with a focus on the health disparities of minorities, women, and children. Through this work I was able to expand my knowledge and awareness of adverse health outcomes, and how different populations are affected. My professional experience as a counselor aligns with this, and has been focused on empowering individuals. I attended Suffolk University and obtained my Masters in Mental Health Counseling with specialties in substance use, relationship therapy, and mindfulness. I work with a diverse population of clients including children, adolescents, adults, and couples to combat symptoms of depression, relationship issues, anxiety, trauma, and more. My therapeutic style is focused around the individual and what outcomes and goals are important to them. I feel that the most critical keys in a counseling relationship are trust, empathy, and support. However, the most important is that the client feels comfortable. I am so thankful to be a part of Maria Droste, where I truly feel that the community empowers therapists and clients to find the best therapeutic fit.

OUTPATIENT THERAPIST

As a Mental Health Counselor, I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, supported, and heard. My approach is empowering and collaborative, working with clients in identifying their needs and supporting them in their efforts to meet the goals they have set for themselves. As a Filipinx, international student, and a graduate of Boston College’s Mental Health Counseling program, the counseling perspective I bring and believe in is inclusive, multicultural, holistic, and social justice-oriented. I draw from various theoretical orientations such as person-centered therapy, multicultural psychology, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and relational lenses. I work mostly with young adults who are facing challenges with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships and family, and life transitions, among others. I enter sessions with the knowledge that my clients are the experts in their own life, and my job as the therapist is to help clients better understand themselves and to help them feel empowered and confident to face life’s challenges.

SUBSTANCE USE THERAPIST

As a trained educator and substance abuse counselor of over 25 years, I have had the privilege of working with many adults, children and families. I am in awe of the human spirit that is so resilient and one’s desire and ability to hope, heal and believe in oneself. Addiction and substance abuse are often complex and at the root of both personal and family issues.  I specialize in helping you through your unique life story.  My overall approach is to be highly empathic, nonjudgmental and patient.  Communicating with compassion, coupled with directness and at times a sense of humor can really help. Experience has taught me to use an eclectic treatment approach, respecting the individual and his or her learning style.  I look forward to meeting with new clients as we begin a journey of hope and healing.
